There is no denying that the Lake District is truly a national treasure. From gorgeous scenery and stunning wildlife, to fun activities and fantastic cultural heritage. The Lakes attract visitors from all over the world eager to see what the fuss is all about. Every year, an estimated 9.17 million people choose this area of the country as a long term holiday destination, this does not include the shorter stays.
The Lake District is now part of UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites, this honour was a long time coming. The dramatic landscapes of the Lakes are unrivalled; the essence of ‘English countryside’ and each picturesque village seems to have stepped straight out of a postcard.
Sightseeing is not the only thing you can do here so, if you’re looking for fun activities, the Lake District is the place to be. In fact, the Lakes has the highest number of outdoor activity centres in the UK and is considered the birthplace of British mountaineering. From hiking to water sports (like windsurfing), you won’t lack for opportunities to have fun. This dictates that the Lake District is for all ages and suits all.
Appleby-in-Westmorland is a market town in Cumbria on the River Eden, it's history dating back to the Norman conquest and lies in a loop of the river Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing to the West. Appleby is also only 2 miles from the Western Dales extension in the Yorkshire Dales National park so is an ideal base for a touring holiday.
The town is the starting point for many dozens of walks over the surrounding fell countryside and along the river Eden.
It has kept its old world charm and the people of Appleby are amongst the friendliest you can find. With Castle and Keep at the brow of the main street and the town at its foot, it seems as if time has stood still. A walk up Borough gate can transport you back into Medieval England, while the charm of the riverside walk provides an opportunity to experience the tranquillity of the countryside within five minutes of the town centre.
In 2020 Appleby In Westmorland was recognised as an Honorary Quidditch Town as the home of Appleby Arrows , in celebration of the new Illustrated Edition of JK Rowlings Quidditch throughout the ages , an essential companion to the Harry Potter series and guide on the wizards favourite sport. Harry Potter fans will find the banner presented to the town outside the Tourist Information Centre.
