Chester Literature Festival at the Storyhouse

This year the Storyhouse is celebrating its 30th anniversary of Literature, with 128 events between the 9th and 30th November jam packed with major authors, broadcasters, poets, storytellers and performances across the festival.

Chester Christmas Markets

The markets are back in the heart of Chester from 16th November – 22nd December. Get into the festive spirit this winter, discover over 70 traditional wooden chalets filled with unique handmade crafts, jewellery and stocking fillers. Why not try a frankfurter on the way round, washed down with some spiced mulled wine?

The Knife Angel at the Cathedral

The Knife Angel is in Chester from 1st November – 28th November to raise awareness of knife crime across the country. Come and see this spectacular work of art in person, standing at a staggering 27 feet high we are sure to say it’s a must see.

12 days of Christmas Parade & Fireworks

Follow the Christmas parade this year from 7pm at Chester Town Hall on Thursday 21st November. Expect to be singing Christmas carols whilst following the procession of performers and musicians being led by a live brass band. Followed by fireworks back at the town hall.

Chester Zoo’s Lanterns

The lanterns return for 2019, experience something magical at Chester Zoo this festive period. Immerse yourself in the spectacular wonderland discovering 9 different worlds filled with illuminations, sparkle & of course snow! Open from the 22nd November – 23rd December.

Christmas at Tatton Park

Nostalgic family favourites are brought to life as you join the Fairy Godmother on an enchanting journey through dark magical woodlands and enchanting forests. Meandering through room’s all dressed in fairy-tale themes. This will be great for children or to just bring out the inner child in us adults. Open from 26th November – 5th January – check website for specific weekend opening times.

The Lanterns Parade

Local Chester school children each year create lanterns that they can parade through the City centre being guided by the Queen of Light. The parade starts at the Town Hall on Thursday 28th November at 7pm and finishes in the city centre approximately 8pm.The lanterns light up the evening with their warm glow as the Chester festive spirit fills the streets.

Santa Dash

For the 9th year in a row, thousands of Santa’s take to the streets of Chester in a bid to raise money for The Hospice of The Good Shepherd and the Countess Charity’s, by running 3.3km dressed in full Santa gear. Taking place from 10am on Sunday 1st December.

Peter Pan Production at the Storyhouse

Journey to Neverland for a high-flying adventure you’ll never forget. The forever-young Peter Pan sails through the skies to bring Wendy and the Darling children to the Lost Children’s enchanted island where the fearsome Captain Hook rules over the high seas. Based on the timeless book by JM Barrie. Showing from 6th December – 12th January, tickets from £15.

Llangollen Christmas Train Rides

Thinking of day to North Wales, this is not to be missed during the Christmas period. Take a ride on a traditional steam train decorated into a Christmas haven. Every child receives a special gift on the journey and the adults on-board receive a mince pie and a tipple from Santa’s little helpers. Running from 7th December - 24th December. 

Royal Ballet, The Nutcracker at the Storyhouse

The Royal Ballet’s glorious production of The Nutcracker, created by Peter Wright in 1984, is the production par excellence of an all-time ballet favourite. It most definitely will be a memorable experience. Showcasing live on Tuesday 17th December, tickets from £19.50.

The Snowman at the Cathedral

Immerse yourself in the irresistible animated tale The Snowman, accompanied by a live orchestra. A heart-warming experience that brings more than a snowman to life and featuring the much-loved classic ‘Walking in the Air’. A festive favourite for the whole family not to be missed. Showings on 20th & 21st December.

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Years Eve Concert at The Storyhouse

Celebrate the conclusion to 2019 with the Berliner Philharmoniker’s glittering New Year’s Eve Concert. This fantastic event will be conducted by Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko and features a lively American programme including the star soprano Diana Damrau as guest soloist.
